The autumn season leads into one of my favorite holidays: Thanksgiving! The seasonal food that is only served once a year has to be one of the top reasons that I love it so much, I mean who doesn’t love a good plate of dressing, cranberry sauce, and so many sides that your taste buds might explode?! Not to mention the multitude of pies for dessert…
But the food is not the only reason I love Thanksgiving. My family has several Thanksgiving traditions and activities that we partake in every year that keeps the spirit light and cheerful. One of these is naming things that we’re thankful for.
This is a very common tradition for this holiday, I’ve noticed, so it wouldn’t surprise me at all if most of you reading this have participated in a similar tradition with your own families. Don’t worry, I’m not going to ask you to share 3 things that you’re thankful for (though if you want to, please feel free!)!
Being thankful has so many benefits for ourselves, and sometimes we don’t even realize it. As you go into the Thanksgiving season, I’d love to share some encouraging and thoughtful tidbits to keep you thankful throughout your day, some one-liners that you can scribble on your mirror!
Gratitude turns what we have into enough.
-So much truth here. When we’re thankful for everything we have, the desire for more and more diminishes.
Being thankful turns your focus away from the bad in your life, and onto the good.
-It takes a lot of effort to be genuinely thankful in times of trial, so if you’re going through a rough time, try finding those diamonds in your life and focus on being grateful for those. The bad things will gradually fade into your peripheral focus.
It is not “happy people” who are thankful. It is “thankful people” who are happy.
-We don’t have to be happy to be thankful! In fact, being thankful is the first step to finding happiness!
What if you woke up today with only the things that you thanked God for yesterday?
-When I read this, I was floored. So much conviction to thank God more often throughout my day, I sure don’t do it enough.
Give thanks to the Lord, for He is good; His love endures forever.- 1 Chronicles 16:34, ESV
What are some of the things you tell yourself to remain thankful daily? Do you have any quotes that encourage you?
And yes, I must ask, what are some special things that you’re thankful for this year?
