When we’re not valuing ourselves the way we should, of course it is important to treat ourselves well physically (reference to Part One). But often, more than we realize, there can be more at play—the spiritual world.
When God created Adam and Eve, the Devil wasted no time interfering in their lives. He saw that this creation of God was a powerful threat to him and wanted to take mankind down with him.
The only difference today is that he’s becoming more skilled and secretive with how he tries to destroy us. We might not have a serpent speak to us and tell us to do something we know is wrong, but he’s among us and just as crafty as ever.
Self-esteem is a big part of his attempt to destroy us. Think about it, we can be hurt and attacked by life on every side, but what better way for Satan to destroy us than to make us believe of ourselves the hatred that he has against us? That way we’re basically doing his work for him!
When we struggle with self-hatred, maybe it’s time for us to try some of the following ideas.
“Being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.”
Philippians 1:6 NIV
For you created my inmost being;
you knit me together in my mother’s womb.
I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made;
your works are wonderful,
I know that full well.
My frame was not hidden from you
when I was made in the secret place,
when I was woven together in the depths of the earth.
Psalm 139:13-15 NIV
Are not five sparrows sold for two pennies? Yet not one of them is forgotten by God. Indeed, the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Don’t be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows.
Luke 12:6-7 NIV
If we pick a verse that speaks to us, we can quote it aloud each day. Even if we don’t feel like it’s true, speak it until we do. Speak it over our lives like it is God speaking a promise to us… because He is!
Find God’s Love Gifts
It’s easy to get into the thinking pattern that the only way we will hear God speak is through the Bible. However, that is far from true.
God created things for us to appreciate each day. When we see a flower; a beautiful sunset; a rock shaped like a heart—we can know that God loves us. It’s His love language to us.
We can remind ourselves that He loves us with every good thing. Remember, even though we may feel lonely, not hearing God’s voice audibly, we can always talk to Him and He is always speaking to us—not only through the Bible, but through Creation.
We may not see it now, but God loves us more than anything and He’s sending love messages to us all the time.
Pray Authority Over Self-Hatred.
Sometimes a lot of attitudes of feelings can be a spiritual battle. When we pray authority over something and command the evil spirits to leave, they just have to, by the authority of Jesus.
Try praying authority over it. Here’s an example:
“In Jesus’ name I take authority over this self-hatred. I command the Spirit of Self-Hatred to go in the name of Jesus. You have no power over me; I am a Child of God.
Father, fill me with Your love, not only for others, but for myself. Help me to see myself as You see me.”
Don’t get me wrong, this is not meant to be a magical formula. But, like anything, give it time and persistence and this will change your life and thinking.
