I don’t think there’s ever been someone who walked out on their front porch, early in the morning with coffee cup in hand, expectantly watching the sun rise–only to be disappointed in the radiant colors displayed before their eyes. I’ve never heard anyone say, “What an ugly sunrise!”, either.
Of course, there have been dreary mornings where the sun is unseen–but as long as the sun is visible, the day has a beautiful beginning. The splash of warm colors brightly covering the morning sky never fail to excite me and prepare me for the day ahead.
But the reason a sunrise never gets old is because it is never the same. You will never, ever, see two identical sunrises. There are many that are similar, consisting of the same colors or the same patterns, but it is impossible for them to be identical. And for this, I am glad. How boring would our days be if the sunrise always looked the same?
In the same way, how boring would life be if we were all the same? If everyone wore the same clothes, had the same personalities, the same dreams, the same ideas, or the same families, then how would movements be made? How would new discoveries be discovered if we all walked in the same shoes or pursued the same carriers?
It took individual dreams and standing out from the crowd to progress history in ways “going with the flow” would have never been able to accomplish. God created each and every one of us separately and uniquely. He tenderly knitted us together with His perfect wisdom and care.
“..You knitted me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made…” –Psalms 139:13-14 (ESV)
Everything that the world may look at as a deformity has a divine purpose in the plan of our Heavenly Father. He created us with purpose and our differences are what God uses to fulfill His uniquely designed plans for our lives.
He gave us gifts and abilities that shine as bright colors that are only for us, never ever to be duplicated. We are one-of-a-kind. And the best part? There is never a sunrise more significant or beautiful than another. Just like there is not a person more significant to God’s plan than anyone else.
Sometimes, that’s hard to grasp. In this world that we live in we are constantly challenged to be better than someone else; to have the best clothes, the better boyfriend, or the best grades. But the truth is that there is no competition in God’s eyes. We are all especially beautiful. And we are all wonderfully unique; incomparable in our personalities, our looks, or anything else that the world will compare us to.
We are as a sunrise. We have a purpose. We are special. So let’s stand out and make the most of our colors; let’s embrace our uniqueness.
