Have you ever read a passage in Scripture, and when you finished, you couldn’t remember what you read? Or you weren’t sure how to apply it to your life?
I’ve been there. Having something to look for as I read the Bible has helped me to find application for my daily life. So I’d like to give you 6 things to look for as you read Scripture in your quiet time.
Look for these 6 elements in any passage of the Bible. (Just remember you may not find all of them in the same passage.)
In your Bible, you can mark these things in a special way to make them stand out. I often draw a box around a promise in a special color or draw a star beside a warning. Marking these things helps me to remember what God has taught me. Putting dates by verses helps me to remember the times when I needed them.
Since these six elements are scattered throughout Scripture, you will always have something to look for. The Psalms are filled with promises and encouragement. The Gospels and Paul’s letters hold many truths and instructions. Warnings are in just about every book, and so are examples that we can learn from—both the good ones to follow and the not-so-good ones to avoid.
If you like to make lists, you could put these six elements as headings in your journal and write down verses under the appropriate heading. Over time, you will gather into one spot verses that remind you of what God has promised, the truths He wants us to keep in our hearts, and the instructions that show us how to live godly in a fallen world. You’ll be able to see easily what attitudes and practices to refuse, and you’ll have encouragement to keep going when life gets hard.
Are you ready for an adventure? Now you know what to look for on your treasure hunt in Scripture. If you have already found some of these elements in the Bible, share in the comments below a promise or instruction that has been precious to you. And happy hunting!
